Hi Heidi,

Glodrush, first issues in 1998 designed by Philip Chaplin. Available in several colours - colbalt, Emerald, Heather and Kingfisher. This is an unlimmited issue and so a pretty piece rather than of great value.

Hope this helps

HI Joe,

Thanks for the helpful advice - I am sure it will be appreciated.

The 2007 Sale of Caithness Glass Museum paperweights was at Mellors and Kirk in Nottingham. I had the good fortune to acquire quite a selection from that sale however these have now all gone to their new homes.
I have managed to dig out the link to the catalogue from the <a href="http://www.mellorsandkirkcatalogues.co.uk/Catalogues/SS160107/index.htm" rel="nofollow">Caithness Glass museum sale</a> if you want to take a look.

Agree, Caithness from the United Kingdom. That glass company, which specialized in paperweights and art glass during its heydey, has gone through rough times and various receiverships (bankruptcies and buyouts). It is now owned by Dartington Glass of the U.K. The good news is that Caithness is still making paperweights. It is based in Scotland.

Although paperweights like your Caithness II (or 2) are called "seconds," they are still often very nice paperweights. You'd be hard-pressed to find any flaw that makes them "seconds." Usually, it's because the design - free form ribbons or lampwork - is just a little bit off what it was supposed to be, or the weight's dome isn't as large as it should be, or because there might be a bit of striation in the glass that the artisan would really prefer not be there.

All-in-all, yours is a typical, but nice piece. Value for these "seconds" is not paramount. It probably originally sold for between $15 and $25(USD). First-run Caithness pieces can go for much more, but the marketplace is flooded with Caithness paperweights, both the originals from the late-1960s and on through the various ownership changes. This has depressed the market for Caithness. In fact, only the classic pieces and limited editions, from the 60s through the 1980s have a high collectable value. Some of the pieces from the 1990s and 2000s have good value only if they were part of a very limited edition.

On eBay, the company Replacements, Ltd., located in the U.S., is running auctions and Buy It Nows in which it is practically giving away abstract Caithness paperweights for between $9.99 and $19.99. If you do a Google search, you can find the website for Caithness Glass. In 2007, as it was undergoing financial upheaval, the Caithness Glass Museum sold off it's entire collection of paperweights - one example of everything the company had made up to that point - at an auction held in the U.K. That put thousands of Caithness paperweights in the marketplace, many of them high-quality pieces. In total, there are probably 3000 separate designs of Caithness paperweights. When you consider that between 500 and 1000 copies of each might have been made, that's a lot of Caithness over the years.

Best advice for you? Don't try to sell the paperweight if you're expecting a windfall. It won't happen. Better to keep it and enjoy it.
