For my latest mini – series I am going to cover how to read the hallmarks that you can find on silver, gold and platinum jewellery.  These are important to all collectors of antique and vintage jewellery as they help us to identify, date and value a piece. Over the next few days I  will discuss:

-  how hallmarks help us when looking at antique and vintage jewellery

About Loupes

-  What are the different hallmark symbols?

-  British hallmarks from the Victorian era through to the 1970s

-  Current British hallmarks

-  European hallmarks

-  Useful books and websites

Dose anybody know wat it is ?

  3. Anne says:

    Hi Lenny,

Whilst I cannot be sure without seeing a picture – The harp is part of the Dublin assay office set of hallmarks. Do you think it could have an Irish connection?

  4. christie says:

i got given a ring from my nan but i would like to no more about it i think te 22 on it means its 22k gold but theres also a crown, anker, suomething that looks like a bridge, a weird shaped building i think, a letter h i think and a womans head. i cant make out what they r can you tell me ?

  5. Anne says:

    Hi

I have an antique silver pocket watch (ladies) with a hallmark that looks like a peacock. The assay says 0.800 and the serial number is 29839 and there is an “S” below the serial number.

Any ideas as to the country of origin?

    Thanks for your help.

    Liz

  7. Anne says:

    Hi Liz,

Not sure exactly where this is from but the silver is .800 grade which would indicate a European origin. Could be French.

  8. Liz says:

I discovered that the logo is a grouse, which indicates Swiss origin. Now if only I could figure out the manufacturer!

  9. Gill says:

    Hi,
I have an antique ladies fobwatch which has what i think some gold on the face. The marking on the inside of the back is as follows :

    10,9351

    $

    $ $ ( $ = lion facing left and standing )

AJ ( AJ is written in a box )

    61684
    2
    RG/12/27 (might be RS )

Can you please tell me anything about the age or value as i have no idea. I think it is silver and it has two hinges on it for opening the back and the front. The numbers on the face are roman numerals and it looks like it is decorated with what might be gold. Your help please would be appreciated. Thanks

  10. Gill says:

sorry i forgot to mention that there are 3 lions in all. Can you please tell me the origin also if possible.

  11. Anne says:

    Sorry Gill,

I know nothing about watches and the markings are not usual Uk hallmarks which I could translate. Perhaps of European origin?
