5 vintage gold rings
Posted by: | CommentsRemember the song “The twelve days of Christmas”? Im thinking of the fifth day when my true love gave to me Five gold rings. Hmmmmm, much better five vintage gold rings. Do you think the extra word could fit into the tune?
Anyway here are five vintage rings made of gold which you might like your true love to give to you this Christmas. Vintage rings with an extra special touch of Romance.
1. 18 carat gold sapphire heart and diamonds.

This has to be a ring given by a true love just look at the wonderful sapphire heart set off by two sparkling white diamonds. A truly beautiful 18 carat gold ring. This ring is set with a heart shaped bright blue Sapphire and two lovely Diamonds. The diamonds are a good size measuring about 3mm diameter and the heart Sapphire about 5mm wide. This ring carries full 18 carat gold hallmarks and is UK ring size K.5, USA size just under 5.5
2. Dearest Ring

Here is a Dearest ring. Dearest rings are given as romantic sentimental jewellery and were very popular in Victorian times although this ring is from the 20th century. The initial letters of the gemstones set into this ring spell out the word DEAREST . This gold ring is set with Diamond, Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire and Tourmaline.
The ring is made of fully hallmarked 9 carat gold. The head of this ring measures a little over 3 mm wide and it is UK ring size Q, USA size 8.25. This piece of jewellery is in excellent condition.
3. Diamond Engagement Ring

Vintage engagement rings are now most sought after. This solitaire engagement ring is made of 18carat gold and is stamped 18ct plat. The platinum, is just the prongs which hold the diamond in place so that they show as white rather than gold.
The diamond in this vintage engagement ring is a nice size at least 1/4 carat, it is quite clear with no visible inclusions. This vitnage engagement ring is finger size UK M.5, USA 6.5.
4. Wedding Ring

A plain gold band , the traditional wedding ring. OK this one has a little shape but the wedding ring has to be a special romantic piece of jewellery.
5. Eternity ring or half eternity ring

The eternity ring was traditionally given on the birth of a child and has gemstones set all the way round. This can be a little uncomfortable to wear and so a half eternity ring where the stones just go across the finger is a great alternative. The half eternity ring looks like the full eternity ring when it is being worn. It is worn on the same finger as the wedding and engagement rings.
Vintage Brooches for Christmas
Posted by: | CommentsRegular readers will know that every year I make a selection of jewellery ideal for gifts this Christmas. Today it I am taking a look at vintage brooches and have some suggestions for all the ladies in your life .
Every lady from Grannie, your best girl friends and the youngest girls can wear a brooch. The great thing about them is that you do not need an exact size unlike rings and your gift will be appreciated and worn with several different outfits.
Vintage brooches for Grannie
As we get older and skin tones change ladies often like to wear paler colours. Maybe Vintage silver brooches would suit rather than bright colours. Silver is a popular material for brooches and there is a huge selection to choose from. Here are a couple of recommendations:
Large silver brooch Silver Locket brooch
Vintage brooches for your Mum or Aunt
Mums and Aunties love flowers so how about a brooch in the shape of a bunch or basket of flowers?
Flower basket brooch Flower Brooch
Vintage Brooches for your best friends
Stylish brooches for our friends I think – Scandinavian silver which has a touch of designer glam?
Scandinavian silver brooch Silver enamel Brooch
Vintage Brooches for Teenagers
Vintage is in fashion so how about a brooch with true vintage style – A cameo brooch or a piece of jewellery set with marcasites which are very vitnage 1959s looking?
Vintage marcasite brooch Cameo Brooch
Vintage Brooches for young girls
Young girls will want to wear a brooch with lots of glitz and shine so a vintage costume jewellery brooch would be in order. Alternatively how about an investment piece of jewellery? An antique brooch which will become an heirloom as the girl grows to a lady?
Party wear vintage jewellery
Posted by: | CommentsThe Christmas party season will start in a few weeks time and I am sure that some of you are beginning to put together your outfits already. Christmas is a time for glitz and glamour, where you can put on your biggest, bling and not look out of place. In fact this Christmas season the more vintage jewellery the better.
What pieces of jewellery are going to stand out on you this Christmas – we’re certainly not looking at small retiring pieces. I’m thinking big bold glass crystal necklaces, diamante earrings, chunky silver charm bracelets and of course the party season is just made for cocktail rings. Of course you wont be wearing all of these pieces at the same time but whichever pieces you choose now is the time to order them to ensure that you get the best pieces and they arrive in time for your party. remember choosing vintage means that you are going to be unique, no one else will be wearing the same jewellery as you . Whats more vintage jewellery is often a bargain compared to new and can be passed on through you family as an heirloom one day.
Heres a few suggestions from AntiquesAvenue for the best party vintage jewellery .

party necklace
Party Necklaces:
Glass necklaces with an aurora borealis finish will look great with a little black dress . These date from the 1950s and 1960s, this type of finish was invented in the 1950s and so cant be from before then.
Diamante earrings:
Look for earrrings where the diamante are set in with prongs rather than glued into the jewellery. This is a sign of an older piece of jewellery and is likely to be better made as the process is quite time consuming.

vintage earrings
Vintage charm bracelets
Many of use collect vintage silver charm bracelets. Either single charms we add along the way or a full bracelet which we have purchased or inherited. These bracelets are loved, cherished and full of memories but they are not often worn everyday as the little pieces catch on out cloths. Silver charm bracelets jingle when we move and they have the added benefit for a part as you can talk about them and all the vintage charms if you run out of conversation.
Cocktail rings
The entire purpose of a cocktail ring is to be big, bright and showey. These rigns can be gold, silver or costume jewellery and in colours to match your outfit. Here is one of my favourites:

Vintage Jewellery Christmas
Posted by: | CommentsEvery Christmas I like to select a few special pieces of vintage jewellery which are especially suitable for gifts this year. Today I am looking at pieces that you might like to ask Santa to bring for yourself, pieces that are all wearable, stylish and could well be a good investment too. Here’s a few tips on what to look out for this year. Cameos and pearls seem to be very popular this year and being timeless are an essential part of every jewellery lovers collection. A charm bracelet which still has space for you to add some special charms of your own, a couple of brooches and amazing cocktail rings to add a touch of glamour and sparkle during the party season.
Cameos
What to look for in a piece of cameo jewellery, first and foremost does the picture appeal to you? Do you like the subject and is it well carved. With shell cameos they should be free of cracks, the carving lines should be smooth and natural rather than rough and angular. No look at the frame , does it suit the picture in proportion and do you prefer gold silver or costume jewellery? Although they are popular pieces of jewellery and I do sell them, I am not a great fan of shell cameo rings as I think the shell is a little soft to stand up to much wear. If you would like a cameo ring look at a hardstone cameo rather than shell . Alternatively just reserve your cameo ring for very special occasions. For wearing more regularly a cameo brooch or earrings are more durable.
Pearls
What to look for in a piece of pearl jewellery. At a reasonable price you can choose between cultured pearls or faux pearls. Cultured pearls have been grown inside an oyster cultured pearls are entirely man made. Either way you have a choice of colours but a creamy or white colour is most classically associated with pearls. If choosing round pearls look for them being well matched in your piece of jewellery in size and shape. The most classical pieces of pearl jewellery are a necklace or earrings. In the past it was usual to wear your pearl necklace together with pearl earrings , this gives a very classy look reminiscent of the 1950s. Pearls do not wear well in rings so if you do want a pearl set ring then please just wear it on special occasions.
Charm Bracelets
Here the choice is normally silver or gold depending on your colour preference and budget. The great this about a charm bracelet is that you can start off simple and then add more pieces over the years. The bracelet will then be totally unique to you . Charm bracelets traditionally were worn fastening with a heart shaped padlock and having 13 charms. Most folks these days like to have many more than 13 charms – they can become quite bold and chunky pieces of jewellery. If you are thinking of filling the bracelet with charms then I suggest you look for one which has a sturdy central chain. Charm bracelets with finer central chains are better for fewer charms or a daintier look.
Look at size, colour, age / style , material and maker /designer for your vintage brooch choice. For most brooches the choice is set by the size colour and material . Brooches by a named designer or maker are for collectors as they attract a premium price. Select you brooch in a size and colour to suit most of your outfits. A brooch in an interesting shape and made from just silver or just gold will go well with most pieces of clothing. Do you want a large statement piece of jewellery – brooches up to 6/7 cms are readily available and are most suited to wearing on heavier weight fabrics. A smaller pin type brooch at one or two centimeters across will add a point of interest and can be attached to lightweight fabrics but beware may leave a hole in the most delicate materials.
Cocktail rings
A true cocktail ring is meant to be big, loud and showy. It is a piece of glamour jewellery for party and occasion wear. Look for a ring with large and colourful stones. A cocktail ring is not meant to be worn every day and can be made from gold, silver or costume jewellery. AntiquesAvenue offers you a wide choice of these special pieces of vintage jewellery. Which finger are you looking at wearing your cocktail ring on? Maybe they are to big for a little finger? Look for a cocktail ring with stones in a colour to match or contract with your party wear.
Why not make sure you get the piece of vitnage jewellery you want for Christmas this year? Leave nothing to chance, find the piece on AntiquesAvenue.co.uk and either print off the page and leave it where your loved one can see it or be even more bold and e.mail them a link to the piece of jewellery on the website.

Halloween Jewellery Ideas
Posted by: | CommentsHave you been invited to a Halloween Party this year? If so then its a great opportunity to dig out and wear some vintage jewellery with a Halloween Theme. Last year I suggested that you could wear Victorian Mourning Jewellery which of course is appropriately black and somber and related to death. This year I am thinking more along the lines of wearing a black outfit and brightening it up with loads of costume jewellery decorated with Halloween icons.
What are the Halloween images which can be found in jewellery? I’ve taken a look through antiquesavenue web shop and my personal archives and found these: Spiders, Ghosts, Witches, Cats, Skulls, Skeletons, Coffins, Cats, Pumpkins, Apples and Bats.
Here are a few examples which can be delivered in time for your Halloween celebration.
Spider Brooch and Spider Bracelet, Apple pendant, cat charms and an amazing skeleton in coffin charm. There is a skull silver charm and if you like last years idea of Victorian Mourning Jewellery there are some great Victorian brooches.
Vintage Wedding Jewellery
Posted by: | CommentsAntiquesAvenue has a department devoted to Vintage Wedding Jewellery and each time a piece goes off to its new home I think how lovely that the Bride has chosen a genuine piece of Vintage Jewellery to wear on her special day. A piece of vintage wedding jewellery can look better than new, be more individual and cost less than new. Better than all of these is that the piece of Vintage Wedding Jewellery can help fulfill both the old and blue parts of the custom for wearing ” Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a silver sixpence in her shoe”.
These items in the poem are meant to all bring good luck to the bride who wears them and this custom probably started back in the Victorian Era
Something Old
Technically most antique or vintage jewellery could fulfill the “Something Old” part of this good luck custom, most brides would prefer something a little bright, white, pretty or sparkling such as pearls, diamante. How about a nice necklace or pair of earrings set with diamante and pearls. This pair of earrings is chandelier type and are very large and glamorous. The “Something Old” is meant to symbolise the past and perhaps a link to the brides family. A piece of Vintage Wedding Jewellery from mum or Grannies Jewelry box would be especially suitable .
Of course not all brides want sparkling white and girly for their wedding day. Some would prefer a Gothic look and so a piece of genuine Victorian Antique Jewellery would be best for ” Something Old”. For a smart wedding where the bride is not wearing the traditional white wedding dress the Bride could still wear something old , a lovely enamel brooch to match the colours of her outfit perhaps.
Vintage wedding Jewellery is not just for the Bride, There are some wonderful pieces available for bridesmaids and the Brides Mother too.
Something Blue“Something Blue”? Why not another colour? I used to think that the colour had been made up to suit the poem however digging in to the history blue does have associations with weddings. The Romans wore blue at their weddings to symbolise Love and Fidelity and it has also been thought to keep bad spirits away. There is a wide range of different blue colours available in Jewellery from pale baby blue ( Glass Jewellery?), sky blue aquamarines too a deep almost black blue found in some Australian Sapphires.
Another idea is to have the something “Old and blue” in your engagement ring and so you will always be wearing your lucky wedding day charms.
I am always happy to provide further advice on the Vintage Jewellery from AntiquesAvenue so please do get in touch if you have any questions.
St Patricks day vintage jewellery
Posted by: | CommentsSt Patrick’s day vintage jewellery
St Patrick’s day is on March the 17th every year, appropriately I just happened to be adding a vintage enamel and gold Shamrock charm to my vintage jewellery shop today and realised that there are several pieces of jewellery suitable for your St Patrick’s day celebration.
St Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland and his special day celebrates all Irish culture. St Patrick’s day celebrations are held in many cities around the world and usually involve a parade, wearing emerald green, Irish music and all accompanies by lots and lots of Guinness. The Shamrock is associated with St Patrick as he allegedly used its 3 part form to teach about the Bible.
