The latest vintage jewellery news from AntiquesAvenue.

As usual Ive been so busy over the Christmas season that I haven’t been able to bring you the latest vintage jewellery news from AntiquesAvenue recently.  Firstly and most importantly, a very big Thank You all for helping to make this the most successful Christmas season ever in my 10 years of trading on-line. I know many of you come back year after year for your Christmas jewellery gifts for yourself and you loved ones and are also recommending the site to your friends. Id like to take this opportunity to wish customers old and new a very Happy New Year. I’ll be searching out lots of special and unique pieces of jewellery for you throughout 2012 and hopefully blogging here regularly with lots of information, hints and a preview of my latest jewellery finds.  Ive made this updating  blog regularly one of my New Years resolutions !

Vintage Cameo Jewellery

Some of the most popular jewellery from AntiquesAvenue is set with cameos. Today id just like to show you a couple of piece Ive added this week. If you’d like to see more please do look in the Cameos section.

Cameo Brooch

Cameo Brooch

A very nicely carved came brooch featuring a classical Goddess. This cameo has been hand carved from shell. The cameo is set into a gold frame stamped as 9ct and there is an attached safety chain. This brooch will date from the early 1900s and it measures about 3.5 cms long

A nice quality hardstone cameo ring carved with the profile of a classical lady. The cameo is set into rose gold which has full Chester hallmarks for 1913.  Hard stone cameos are much rarer than shell cameos and are quite collectible. The head of this cameo ring measures about 1.2 cms up finger. This ring is UK finger size O, just over USA size 7.25.
The shank of this ring is a little off round but is still very wearable, the ring has been priced accordingly.

Silver Jewellery

Vintage silver jewellery is more popular now than ever. I am finding that 1970s silver is really sought after and am pleased to be able to bring you a few fresh pieces ever week. This weeks new additions include this lovely 1970s silver bangle and a silver charm bracelet from about the same time.

This years hot jewellery gifts

I am in an almost unique position to be able to tell you what jewellery gifts were hot this year. Here are this years top sellers

1. Vintage silver lockets , These were selling out almost as fast as I couple add them to the site. I will try and get a few more but I do know that one years hot gift may not be next years.

2. Bracelets. Gold bracelets and silver bagles. Bracelets are quite popular gifts as it is quite easy to get the size right

3. Cameos. All my pretty lady cameo brooches sold out early this year. I think these were last years no 1 favourite so perhaps slipping a little in popularity

4. Gold rings.  Mainly men buying these for their lady loves and yes many were last minute purchases.

5. Earrings.  Gemstone set earrings making a comeback? More popular this year than they have been recently

6. Brooches . A perennial favourite and the easiest jewellery to buy as a gift as one size usually fits all.

Website changes

I may not have updated this blog but I have been busy. There are now two new sections on the website for Art Deco Jewellery and Marcasite Jewellery to help you find these more easily.

Art Deco Jewellery

All my art deco jewellery and art deco style jewellery in one section. Most of the jewellery in this department actually dates form the 1920s and 1930s however some is just art deco style and is newer in date. I will tell you  if its genuine art deco era or newer in the item description.

Marcasite jewellery

Maracsites are tiny faceted natural gemstones with a natural black glitter. Marcasites have long been popular in Jewellery as they glitter like diamonds under artificial light especially candlelight. Maracsites are usually but not always set into silver in intricate patterns.

Insuring your vintage jewellery

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

Do you insure your valuable vintage jewellery? Even a single piece can be quite valuable these days and a whole collection would be very expensive to replace. It is important to realise that your vintage jewellery should be insured for much more than you pay for it infact about double the purchase price. This high replacement value takes into account the rarity of your item and the fact that you cannot simply nip into a high street shop to replace it. Vintage jewellery takes a lot of time and effort to replace and this bumps up the cost your jewellery should be insured for. The insurance valuation is based on what you would reasonably expect to pay for a replacement piece including the time and effort it would take you to find another similar piece.

Valuable vintage jewellery

AntiquesAvenue has now added an insurance valuation to the invoice you receive with your jewellery. Please do retain this incase you ever need to make a claim against your insurance. You could also consider printing off the web page displaying the description and pictures your jewellery to add to the records you keep. This is also a great way to document your jewellery collection

Vintage engagement rings news

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

I see vintage engagement rings are in the news again with Kate Moss’s engagement to Jamie Hince. Kate has received an original art deco diamond vintage engagement ring.  This ring is said to be worth tens of thousands of pounds.

Not all vintage engagement rings have to cost tens of thousands of pounds you can find them from about £100 including art deco and diamond rings. Kate Middleton also received a vintage engagement ring from Prince William. For stylish ladies like these both to receive vintage rings is a great indicator of how desirable vintage jewellery is these days.

AntiquesAvenue has a lovely selection of vintage engagement rings here is are a few for you to look at.

Vintage Jewellery News

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

Its seems ages since I last update you with the latest vintage jewellery news from AntiquesAvenue.  It was a busy festive season and Ive been flat out re-stocking the site with fresh vintage jewellery and accessories and re-organising to make the jewellery easier to find.

Site changes

There are now new sections for Micromosaic jewellery and what I have called Love jewellery. The micromosaic jewellery ranges from Victorian to the 1950s and has all shapes including brooches, crosses and pendants.  The Love Jewellery has a Love related theme including Hearts, Cherubs and Mizpah brooches.

Ive also move all the vintage engagement rings into their own area as have all the silver brooches and costume brooches. All tiles, trinket boxes and paperweights into a new section called Antiques.

Vintage Jewellery

Amongst the fresh vintage jewellery added to the site are gent cufflinks, some lovely moonstone pieces and as usual a great selection of vitnage charms and bracelets. Coming up over the next couple of weeks is a selection of nice silver jewellery, some cameo pieces and more costume necklaces.

New site

Have you seen the new site at www.antiquejewels.co.uk ? This is slow to grow as I dont really have a lot of time to spend on it. The intention of this site is to hold just the best of the antique jewellery from antiquesavenue and that all the jewellery will date from 1920 or before. Hopefully this is going to help you find the pieces of jewellery you want . There are now almost 2000 piece of jewellery on antiquesavenue and so the pages were growing so long that many of the pieces were not being seen. AntiqueJewels.co.uk is fully operational and you can buy items immediately and there all postage is included in the price you see.

Valuations

Once again I find myself being asked several times a day to carry out valuations. Sorry but this is not a service I can offer, there are several on-line companies which do offer this specialist service or you can take your pieces to your local auction house who should be able to help.

Special Requests

Are you looking for a special elusive piece of jewellery you cant find ? If so do drop me a line you never know I just might be able to help

Happy Hunting

Anne

Sapphires and Diamonds the next jewelley trend

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

So Prince William has given his bride to be Kate Middleton his mother Princes Dianna’s engagement ring. I’m thinking that may have quite an impact on us interested in vintage jewellery.  As we know when there is a big event like a Royal Wedding their tends to be a fashion trend which follows it . There are three things I find interesting about this ring  which may each become a trend

1) This ring is a vintage piece of jewellery

As I have commented quite recently I am seeing an increasing trend for vintage engagement rings to be given for modern engagements. Even more brides to be will be now on the look out for an older piece of jewellery. Some will like Prince William and Kate Middleton raid their family jewellery inheritances. Others will be looking to purchase vintage engagements rings which often represent better value than new. Either way I suggest that you get a vintage engagement ring checked out by a reputable jewellery as you wouldn’t want the stones to fall out before the big day.

Sapphire and diamond jewellery

2) The ring is made of sapphires and diamonds

The sapphire and diamond engagement ring has been out of fashion recently – engagement rings have been popular with just diamonds – preferably a large single diamond. I think this trend will now change. I certainly will be on the look out for more sapphire and diamond set rings which can be used for engagements. I also think that sapphire and diamond brooches, necklaces and earrings will be coming back.

3) The  is a very traditional style.

Most jewellery bought new recently has been very modern in style. Is this Royal engagement going to signal a return of a trend of more traditional style jewellery?

Anyway I hope this engagement ring brings William and Kate much happiness for the future.
