Structure of Vintage Rings

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

When buying  vintage rings over the interenet it is useful to know the names of the parts which make up the ring. These terms will normally apply to most gemstone set rings including  engagement rings and cocktail rings.

Parts of a ring

Parts of a ring

Head  This is all the bit that stands above the shank, in the above diagram the claws, collet and stone.

The Hoop or shank is the bit of the ring that goes around the finger – this is where we look for hallmarks and makers marks

The setting is the  bit that holds the stones – the collet and the claws. These can be a different colour or metal to the shank. For example a yellow gold hoop can have a white gold setting when the stones are best set off by white.

Claws, these hold the stones into the collet

Collet a type of pierced cup which the stones sit in

Bezel the bit of the ring under the Collet

Shoulders the sides of the ring which come up to the stones

Lets look a couple of vintage rings where these parts can be seen

Here you can see the plain gold shank , a highly decorative collet and the claws holding in the stones.

Retro Ring

This Retro ring is quite different to the amethyst ring but the parts can still be seen, a plain shank rising to textured shoulders. The setting is in white gold to show off the diamonds and you can clearly see the claws holding in the central stone.

Cocktail Rings

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

Have you heard the term cocktail ring? To me its always sounded like a group of people meeting up regularly to drink exotic colourful alcoholic beverages but actually a cocktail ring is a bright and colourful ring meant to be worn to parties and special events. The idea of the cocktail ring is that it is glamorous with way too much bling for every day wear.

I have heard that the cocktail ring originated in the illegal drinking dens of the American prohibition. It was a style statement to show that you were part of the in crowd. Whatever its origins the cocktail ring came to be a high fashion symbol in the cocktail era of the later 1940s and 1950s.

A cocktail ring can be made of any materials, gold, silver , platinum or costume jewellery. To be a cocktail ring the metal needs to be set with either a very large stone or lots of smaller stones in bright colours. The idea is all about show.

Cocktail rings have been see on the hands of famous celebrities recently including Kate Beckinsale and Miley Cyrus.

Here are a few super cocktail rings for you to look at, ready to wear to your next big glamorous event.

Half Eternity Ring

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

Looking at popular types of vintage rings. The eternity ring is worn on the ring finger in addition to wedding and engagement rings.  The eternity ring is set with gemstones all the way round. These gemstones can be diamonds but also they could be sapphires, emeralds, rubies or any other gemstone of choice. These stones are of uniform shape and size and are very beautiful but a ring set like this can be a little uncomfortable to wear due to the stones in the ring. A more comfortable alternative is the half eternity ring which has gemstones across the part of the ring which shows above the finger but is a plain band round the rest of the ring . The half eternity ring is given for the same reasons as an eternity ring and also worm on the ring finger.

Eternity rings are normally given to symbolise a great event, the birth of a child or an important anniversary.

Your choice of eternity ring can be made of gold, silver or platinum and would normally be chosen in the same metal and carat purity as the wedding and engagement rings.  Different metals worn on the same finger will cause one of the rings to wear more than necessary.

Half eternity ring diamond gold

A very pretty half eternity ring made of fully hallmarked 9 carat gold and set with 3 blue gemstones ( Spinels I think) and 4 diamonds. The shank of the ring is yellow gold and the head is white gold to set off the colour of the gemstones. The head of the ring measures about 0.4 cms wide and 2 cms long. This is UK ring size Q, USA size 8.5

Just like wedding and engagement ring it is now very fashionable to buy vintage half etrnity rings, these are better value that new eternity rings .

Ring Size Chart

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

What Ring size do you need?

As with most other things, rings are measured differently depending which country you live in. I provide UK and USA sizes in all my ring descriptions. There is a different sizing system used in Europe. You can buy ring sizing gauges but if you don’t have one handy you can estimate your ring size. Take a piece of string and wrap it around the widest part of your finger (possibly the knuckle joint?) – you can now measure the string in millimetres and use the chart below.  If in any doubt please do ask before buying.

Design a ring

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

Want to have a little fun with Rings? The V& A museum ( Victoria and Albert) have a cute little programme where you can design your own ring and add it to a gallery if you like. The rings are quite simple but it does allow you to see some of the steps involved.
There is nothing to design quite as ornate as this marcasite and art glass set ring which you can find on antiquesavenue.co.uk                Vintage Ring

Ring Sizes

Don’t know what size ring you need?

As with most other things, rings are measured differently depending which country you live in. I provide UK and USA sized in all my ring descriptions. There is a different sizing system used in Europe.

You can but ring sizing gauges but if you don’t have one handy you can estimate your ring size. Take a piece of string and wrap it around the widest part of your finger (possibly the knuckle joint?) – you can now measure the string in millimetres and use the chart below.

UK SIZE A B C D E F G H I J K L M
USA SIZE 0.5 1 1.5 2 2.5 3 3.25 3.75 4.25 4.75 5 5.5 6
SIZE MM 37.8 39 40.2 41.4 42.6 43.8 45 46.2 47.4 48.5 49.1 50.3 52.1

UKSIZE N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z
USASIZE 6.75 7 7.25 7.75 8.5 9 9.25 10 190.5 11 11.25 12 12.5
SIZEMM 53.4 54.7 55 57.2 58.5 59.8 61.1 62.4 63.6 64.8 66 67.2 68.4

Re-Sizing your ring.

If your ring is just one or two sizes to big or two small it is normally possible for you to have the ring re-sized.  Take the ring to any decent jewellery shop and they will be able to help. The cost should be £15 to £25 ish for a simple ring. A ring which is very fancy with lots of stones will need more work and so may cost more.

Antique rings and Vintage rings

Antique rings and Vintage rings

Of all the types of antique and vintage jewellery available rings are possibly the most popular especially genuine antique and vintage rings made from gold or silver and those set with both precious and semi precious stones.

In general I draw a division between antique and vintage jewellery  where antique dates anything before circa 1920 and vintage between that time and the 1970s .  Although with the 1980s now becoming 30 years old I suspect that these will soon be vintage too.Antique Ring

Antique Rings:

In general the collector or investor can find  antique rings from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Now and then a genuine Georgian ring can be found but these are quite rare and expensive.

Antiques Avenue offers a selection of antique rings including those set with small gemstones such as diamonds and sapphires, semi precious stones including turquoises. There are also pearl and cameo set rings. Most of the antique rings we can find today are made of  gold. It is particularly nice to find and antique ring with a set of hallmarks so that we can date the ring accurately and tell easily what carat gold it is made of. Unfortunately many antique gold rings are not hallmarked as the laws did not require this at the time they were made.

Which antique rings should you look out for today? I suggest that you find one that really appeals to you and just wear it on special occasions not for every day wear. It seems such a shame to damage something that has survived the past 100 years or more. Popular colours in later Victorian rings were red garnets, blue turquoises and sapphires and white diamonds and pearls. There are also multi coloured gemstone rings to be found where the initial letters of the stones spell out a word such as Dearest or Regard.

A word of caution, antique rings tend to be on the small side which is great if you have slim fingers. If you are thinking about buying an antiuqe ring and having it re-sized I suggest that you ask before you buy if it is suitable for re-sizing. My normal advice to customers is that they will be fine for resizing one or two sizes up or down but seldom do I reccomend more as the setting of any stones could be disturbed.

vintage ringVintage Rings:

Wedding rings, engagement rings, cocktail rings, dress rings, eternity rings, signet rings: all of these can be found from anytime during the 1900s.  New materials for making rings were introduced and whilst gold is undeniably still the most frequent material found in 20th century rings there are also more rings made of silver and a few special platinum rings.  Unlike antique rings, I think that many vintage rings are suitable for every day wear and certainly many of them can be found a prices cheap enough not to worry to much about this.

Gold is now very expensive so how about looking at vintage silver rings? Art deco silver rings made of silver and set with multicoloured crystals or marcasites can be found for under £40. Scandinavian designer silver rings from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s and very stylish or how about a sparkling cocktail ring made of nine carat gold and set with semi precious but still colourful gemstones. The choice is quite vase.

AntiquesAvenue is extending its selection of vintage jewellery in 2010 to include more antique rings and vintage rings . IN the meantime here is a small selection of what can be currently found in the shop.
