Pearls, popular in jewellery for centuries, come in many different types and kinds. You hear about natural pearls, faux pearls , cultured pearls, Akoya pearls, SouthSea pearls and Baroque pearls.
Do you know the difference between any other type of pearl and a baroque pearl? A Baroque pearl is a pearl which is not round, it has an irregular shape. Pearls are formed around a grain of sand or similar entering the shell of an oyster. If that grain is not round then the pearl formed will also be of irregular shape.

Baroque pearl pendant
Baroque
is a term referring to the irregular or asymmetrical shape of an item. There was a Baroque period during throughout the 1600s when pearls were very popular.
Once upon a time irregular shaped pearls were highly prized and were used as the base for fantastical jewellery such as the body of a unicorn, merman or cockerel. Nowadays they are not often set into jewellery but ones that are not too far off round are made into necklaces which have all the lustre and sheen of a standard pearl necklace but at a much lower cost. Strangely although necklaces with baroque peals are normally cheaper , when set into jewellery such as pendants or brooches baroque pearl jewellery usually costs more as the work all needs to be done by hand due to the differing shapes and sizes.

Baroque Pearl Necklace
Baroque pearls are so popular that you can even find costume jewellery set with man made baroque pearls.
Interested in buying some antique or vintage baroque pearl jewellery? AntiqueAvenue normally ahs a few nice pieces available.
vintage pendant pearl amethyst silver baroque
What an amazing vintage pendant and is in the antique baroque style although it actually dates from the early 1900s. This pendant is made of silver and set with a central real amethyst and baroque and round pearls (I am presuming the round pearls are cultured although I cannot test these without damaging them). The smaller “amethysts” are coloured glass. I have added a newer silver chain so that this pendant is ready to wear.
Material:Silver, amethyst and costume jewellerySize: Pendant is 4 cms long and 3.6 cms wide. The silver chain is 60 cms longAge:Early 1900s Condition: Excellent

Taking a quick look at all the fresh vintage jewellery I have been adding to my shop www.antiquesavenue.co.uk
Silver Bangles:
During the 1970s, silver bangles were highly fashionable and they are now quite sought after to wear today. These bangles come in several different depths and you can wear them singly or in groups. Some of the bangles have attached safety chains but as the catches are normally quite secure many people prefer not to have a chain as these do tend to get in the way a bit.
I have just completed adding a nice selection of silver bangles including this really special matching pair of silver bangles.

Pair silver bangles
It rare to find a matching pair of vintage silver bangle bracelets like this. This sale is for a matching pair each bangle having the same floral decoration all the way round. These bangles measure about 1.5 cms deep and they open wide to fit to your wrist and are suitable for most women’s wrists expect for very large. Combined these weigh over 65 grams.
This pair of bangles are made of fully hallmarked sterling silver and can be dated to 1974. You could wear them both on the same wrist or in the Victorian manner with one on each wrist.
Plain chains and charm bracelets:
I am regularly asked for chains and charm bracelets without attachments . Now I have a special selection and a section dedicated to these accessories.

Heavy charm bracelet
A really heavy chunky silver charm bracelet ready for you to hang your own charm from. This bracelet weighs a massive 77 grams, measures about 19 cms long. The links in this bracelet are about 1.8 cms wide. Most of the links on this chain are hallmarked. It fastens with a heart shaped padlock and has an attached safety chain
Ive also added a few more silver charm bracelets and geuine vintage silver charms
Antique Gold Rings
Another very popular piece of antique Jewellery. I really do love this ring:

Antique Ring
18ct gold diamond pearl ring Victorian hallmarked 1889
A really beautiful antique 18 carat gold ring which is carries full Chester hallmarks which date the ring to 1889. This genuine antique Victorian ring is set with 5 diamonds surrounded bu a split pearl border. This ring really sparkles and the inside of the shank is romantically inscribed inscribed from AG to ES. The head of the ring measures about 7 mm wide. It is ring size UK N, USA 6.75.
Whats Next?
Over the next couple of weeks I will mainly be adding antique and vintage gold jewellery to my shop. Gold charm bracelets, brooches and more rings.

Antique and Vintage Charms
Charms have been worn and collected throughout history right from the ancients up until today. Antique and vintage charms can be found in all shapes and forms and are made of a multitude of different materials. They are also called amulets or fobs ( perhaps a little larger than the average charm). Charms are often worn on bracelets but are equally suited to being worn on a necklace, brooch or an antique watch chain. Victorian ladies sometime wore them suspended from their Chatelaines and why not wear a pair of matching charms as earrings?
If you are looking to purchase a charm or charm bracelet today you have a wide choice. There is always the simple option of buying a new piece however you will find that these do not generally have the quality of a vintage or antique charm, you are more likely to see another person wearing the exact same charm and you will pay more for the equivalent piece if it is new. Buying vintage or antique charms also comes with a history attached to them which adds to their sentimental value.
Traditionally a charm bracelet was bought blank or with just one charm attached and the lucky wearer was given or purchased an additional charm to mark significant events in her life until there were thirteen charms in all. Most charm collectors could not stop at the traditional number thirteen and many bracelets are seen much fuller than this. A young girl could be given a silver cat or horse to signify her favourite pets. A girl passing a ballet exam might be given a ballerina, a key for her 18th birthday, an “I love you spinner” from her first boyfriend and a crystal studded ring in a box upon her engagement. When she got married a bible and an opening church charm would be added to the bracelet and a stork on the birth of her first child. Travel was also marked with an aeroplane, boat or a silver and enamel shield from each place visited. Some people made up charm bracelets along a particular theme.
Interesting ones I have seen are the signs of the Zodiac, buildings of London, breeds of dog or puffed heart charms. Some just collect opening or articulared charms or charms set with crystals. It is also possible to collect by charm manufacturer such and Nuvo charms or Chim charms AntiquesAvenue offers you what is probably the best selection of vintage silver charm bracelets on the Internet. These are all genuine vintage items which come as they were made up over 30 or more years ago. There are some wonderful antique charms, and a wide range of vintage silver charms of all shapes, sizes and makers.
Dont forget costume jewellery charms too if you want a change from silver. Gold charms are much rares than silver charms and more expensive. Normally I would recommend that you collect either gold or silver or costume jewellery charms each on a separate charm bracelet – mixing these materials may well lead to a disproportional amount of wear to the softer charms. Please remember that whatever type of vintage or antiuqe charm you collect I am happy to help you with your selection and send additional photographs if required.

Wedgwood Brooch
One of the most popular type of antique or
vintage brooches I get asked for is a Wedgwood Jasper cameo set brooch ( especially a Victorian one) just like in this picture. The central plaque of the brooch is made of Jasper a high fired ceramic. The design on this brooch has been created by sprigging. Sprigging starts with an artist carving the pattern and a mould being created in plaster from that master. A piece of the damp clay is pressed into the mould and then the image created is removed and applied to the background. The jasper type clay was invented by J. Wedgwood but the clay and using it in this manner for jewellery was copied by other makers.
Jasper Jewellery was made throughout both the 19th and 20th centuries. Originally the patterns were based on classical designs however during the 1970s and the 2000′s some more modern designs have been created. in fact during the last 10 years Wedgwood employed some big name jewellery designers to create up to date deigns for them.
How can I tell how old my Wedgwood Jasper brooch is?
Take a look on the back. If the brooch has an open back you may well see the word Wedgwood impressed. Wedgwood on its own without any other words could well be early to mid Victorian. “Wedgwood England” between 1880s and 1920s. “Wedgwood made in England” is usually post 1920s. Please note that on very small pieces there well may be no makers name and your brooch could still be Wedgwood.
Also take a look at the metal, this could have hallmarks which can be used to date your Wedgwood brooch or it may carry the JW makers hallmark in the silver or gold.
Care of Wedgwood Jasper Brooches.
The material is high fired ceramic and can be chipped or cracked so take care not to drop your brooch . Now take a look at the material the jasper is set into. If this is marked as silver or gold you can use a little water and a soft toothbrush to clean your brooch is it is very dirty. Pat the brooch dry and store where it cannot be damaged by other jewellery. you could wrap your brooch in a piece of acid free tissue paper.
If the metal is not hallmarked as gold or silver it could be made of a costume jewellery material and I suggest that you do not get this wet as it could become damaged. Just use a soft brush to clean.
Where to buy Wedgwood jasper Brooches.
AntiquesAvenue Antique and Vintage jewellery shop likes to carry a range of Wedgwood jasper jewelry including brooches. Other than this it is fun to hunt could your local antique fair or antiques center and you might get lucky. You can expect to pay between about £15 and several hundred pounds for your Wedgwood jasper brooch depending upon its age, the desirability of the cameo and the material into which it is set
Happy Hunting
