AntiquesAvenue 2008 round up / New Year resolutions 2009

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

This led to me thinking about the changes AntiquesAvenue has gone through in 2008 and what I should plan for 2009.

2008 started off with the main move of AntiquesAvenue from eBay to AntiquesAvenue.co.uk  on-line shop. This was a bit of a speculative enterprise but fortunately has proved very popular with both collectors and unique gift buyers and now most of my best stock is offered through the shop. In September I started this blog with the intention of sharing with others the knowledge that I found so difficult to obtain when I started out to be an antiques dealer. I was delighted to find that Google has rounded off a successful year for me by awarding my AntiquesAvenue Antiques Blog a page rank of 3 this morning. Excellent after just a few  months almost daily blogging.

So with such change for me in 2008 I am wondering what is in store for AntiquesAvenue in 2009? Here are a couple of starters :

- Increase the rate at which I add information to my blog ( daily ?) . AntiquesAvenue is intended to develop  into a first class resource for antique and collectors . It would be great for other antique or collectables dealers wanted to join with me in this – please do contact me.

- I am going to add fresh stock to antiquesavenue.co.uk weekly and will bring you a round up of whats new here so check back often to have first pick.

- AntiquesAvenue New Year sale will start  week – details coming soon.

Happy New Year

Anne

Turquoise – Decembers Birthstone

Posted by: | Comments (2)

Turquoise is this months Birthstone and it is also for the star sign Sagittarius. The turquoise is prized because of its lovely blue to blue-green colour which goes especially well with both silver and gold  jewellery. As the turquoise is a relatively soft gemstone and is opaque is is polished into cabochons or hand carved rather than faceted .

Turquoise has been used in jewellery since the ancient times and in mythology is thought to change colour to warn of oncoming illness or danger. So why not seek out some special pieces of turquoise to give as birthday presents at this time of year? Here are a few available in antiquesavenue.co.uk shop you might like:

It looks like vintage brooch lovers like myself are in high company. The American new First lady in waiting Has been seen wearing lots of wonderful pieces. Just look at how she has converted a cardigan into a wrap by pinning three flower brooches to it – so easy to follow and so effective.  How about trying one of these pretties yourself?

Amber – gemstones

Posted by: | Comments (2)

Amber

Amber is an organic gemstone , it is made from the fossilised resin of pine trees which lived millions of years ago.  It can be carved or polished so that it has a smooth polished surface and in this form it is popular in jewellery.  Occasionally an insect, small leaves or a pine needle  can be found embedded in the amber this is quite rare.

How to tell amber from its imitations:

Amber has several characteristic which enable it to be told apart from plastic and glass imitations, it is light weight, warm when touched and easily produces static electricity when rubbed . Also when viewed under a black light amber glows a strange greenish yellow colour. It has a characteristic smell when heated and will float in strong brine where plastics will sink.

Amber in Jewellery:

Here is a nice antique piece of amber jewellery( a Lavalier) available from antiquesavenue.co.uk. It is a superb Edwardian pendant made of amber with gilt overlay. This is in art nouveau style and dates from the early 1900s. On one side there is a faux lock. The amber measures 3.7 cms. A genuine antique piece of jewellery in lovely condition

The rich Victorians loved to have an array of specialist cutlery at the tables of their large banquets and developed a piece for every possible use: Salt spoons, Caddy spoons, butter knives, cheese knives, fish knives, ladles, scoops and picks. Here’s a pretty piece of Victorian silver I thought you would like to see:

Victorian sugar sifter

Victorian sugar sifter

This is a sugar sifter spoon – made so that you can add a delicate sprinkling of caster or powdered sugar to your desert. This special collectible spoon has a pierced bowl and an Apostle finial to the handle. It is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1897. It measures about 9.5 cms long and weighs about 8 grams
So what is an Apostle spoon? According to Wikipedia these are:

An apostle spoon is a spoon (usually silver or silver-plated, but sometimes of other metals, such as pewter) with an image of an apostle or other Christian religious figure as the termination of the handle, each bearing his distinctive emblem.

Originating in early-fifteenth century Europe as spoons used at table (often produced in sets of thirteen), by the sixteenth century they had become popular as baptismal presents for god-children, but were dying out by 1666. In some communities this tradition continued until at least the mid-twentieth century. Shakespeare refers to it in Henry VIII, Act 5, Scene 3, where Cranmer declines to be sponsor for the infant Elizabeth because of his lack of money. King Henry banters him with “Come, come, my lord, you’d spare your spoons.”

Sets of the twelve apostles are not common, and complete sets of thirteen, with the figure of Jesus on a larger spoon, are still rarer.

Want to own this silver sugar sifter – I am currently offering it for sale on eBay. 23/12/ 08 Update sorry this is now sold

Silver Grape Scissors

What am I?

Here is this weeks What am I? Do you know what these are? These special type of scissors have gone completely out of fashion these days but were regularly seen in fashionable Victorian and Edwardian households. You can also see them at banquets and in the poshest restaurants.
Very collectable these days – especially in their original boxes and when they have a full set of Victorian Silver hallmarks:

Grape Scissors

Grape Scissors

Grape scissors can be identified by their rounded tip and the handles being angled away from the blades.

This particular pair of Grape Scissors are fully hallmarked for London 1897 and have the makers mark “GJDF”. I believe that this makers mark is for: George Maudsley Jackson and David Landsborough Fullerton of Josiah Williams & Company a high quality and sought after silversmith.
Here are the hallmarks for those interested:
