Here is Novembers Give Away from AntiquesAvenue. This vintage brooch is bright and colourful – I find it particularly interesting due to the wide range of materials used in in. The frame is metal – the diamante are glass, the flowers seem to be real dried miniatures set under plastic. With a mainly turquoise / Blue colourway I think this costume jewellery brooch dates from the 1960s

Mikimoto Pearls

Mikimoto Pearls

There are some names which excite jewellery lovers. Names from history such as Faberge, Cartier and Tiffany. When it come to cultured pearls that exiting name is Mikimoto. Their new cultured pearls are nice but in my opinion their vintage cultured pearls are even lovlier. Here are a superb pair of Mikimoto pearl earrings. Set in silver and complete in their original box. Just look at the lustre on those pearls.

I love victorian brooches and often come across sentimental pieces from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Mizpah brooches were given between parted lovers – they all have one thing in common the word “Mizpah” and the legend ” may the Lord watch between me and thee when we are absent one from another”.

I didnt quite understand how the word Mizpah was connected with the words and have discovered the following entry on Wiki :

Mizpah brooch

Mizpah brooch

Mizpah

is an emotional bond between people who are separated (either physically or by death). Mizpah jewellery is worn to signify this bond and the word “mizpah” can often be found on headstones in cemeteries and on other memorials. From Genesis 31:49 of the Bible

“And Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.”

Susie Cooper – Glen Mist design

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Susie Cooper originally issues her pots under her own trade mark and later sold designs to Wedgwood.  Amongst others her Susie Cooper  Glen Mist Design can be found made by her own pottery and by Wedgwood – only the backstamps are different. I have several pieces of Susie Coopers own label Glen Mist available and so wanted to know the date that this was produced.

Whilst searching out the date of this transfer I came across a rather good Susie Cooper information website which may interest you.

Victorian Brooches – collectable and wearable antiques

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
Brooches are very special pieces of vintage jewellery as they are worn on clothing rather than attached directly to the person. This means that the shapes and sizes can often be more varied and elaborate than rings ( for example ) which have to be more exact in size and proportion and can be less extreme in their design.

The Victorians loved their brooches and today many have survived and can be loved, collected and worn today. There are many types of Victorian Brooches including: Mourning brooches, Scottish or Celtic brooches, name brooches, cameo brooches and diamond brooches. Silver and gold were popular precious metals but other materials such as Jet and coral can also be found. AntiquesAvenue offers you a great selection of original antique Victorian brooches so please do take a look around.

Here is a gallery of just a few original antique Victorian brooches:
